Standards and DRM

Published 11.11.2015 - modified 15.11.2023

Why are standards protected?

Standards, SFS handbooks and other publications are protected by copyright law. A limited number of rights are given to customers when they purchase such publications.

An SFS standard or an equivalent SFS publication purchased as a PDF file can only be used in as many workstations as specified in the order. They may not be stored in a company network. Online use always requires a written agreement with SFS.

All standards and handbooks in PDF format are protected by DRM (Digital Rights Management). Accessing DRM protected files requires installing the FileOpen PDF plug-in on your computer.

How to install the FileOpen plug-in:

Go to http://plugin.fileopen.com/all.aspx and choose the operating system you're using.

Click OK to download the FileOpen plug-in installation program. We recommend that you select 'open' in the file download dialog to run the installer immediately. If you opt to save the programme on your computer you will need to run it manually.

The installer may need to alter your Acrobat settings and to close Acrobat if it is running. You must agree to allow these changes for the install process to complete successfully.

When the plug-in is successfully installed, you may open the publication you have purchased. When opening a file for the first time, your computer has to be connected to the internet, because the publication has to be registered as being opened with the machine in question. NOTE: The publication may only be opened by the end user.

DRM Q & A

I cannot access the FileOpen download page automatically when opening the document for the first time.

The email you have received from SFS contains a link to the download page: http://plugin.fileopen.com/all.aspx

If you cannot open the link directly from the email, please copy it to the address bar in your browser.

I'm having trouble installing the FileOpen plug-in.

If, when opening a DRM protected publication for the first time, you receive a message that one or more Adobe components are required, FileOpen has not installed correctly. Click "Accept" to let Adobe install the missing component(s).

If you don't have sufficient rights to install programmes on your computer, please contact your IT administration.

Do I have to pay to use the FileOpen plug-in?

No. You may download the FileOpen plug-in free of charge.

What happens if my computer breaks down or is replaced?

We recommend that you save a backup copy of the publication.

I cannot print the document.

I you cannot print the document, please check your computer settings or your printer. DRM protection does not prevent printing.

Can the publications I purchased be opened with all reading devices and on all operating systems?

DRM protected publications in PDF format can be opened with devices that support the PDF file format and the FileOpen document protection technology.

To open DRM protected documents, i.e. to install FileOpen, you need one of the following operating systems.

  • Windows 98 or later
  • Macintosh OSX
  • Linux

Check the list of current system requirements in http://plugin.fileopen.com/all.aspx

DRM protection doesn't necessarily work on all mobile devices.

Do I have to install FileOpen every time I purchase a standard?

No. Once the FileOpen plug-in is installed on your computer, you may open any publications you purchase later on without having to install FileOpen again.

Please note: When opening a file for the first time, your computer has to be connected to the internet, because the publication has to be registered as being opened with the machine in question.

Is it possible to send a document to another computer?

  • An SFS standard in PDF format may be saved on as many workstations as you purchased a license for. The same amount of copies can be printed.
  • An ISO or IEC standard in PDF format may be saved on one workstation and printed once.
