1.1 Tässä eurooppalaisessa standardissa esitetään maata syrjäyttävien paalujen tekemistä koskevat yleiset periaatteet. Ne ovat paaluja, jotka asennetaan maahan kaivamatta tai poistamatta maasta materiaalia, lukuun ottamatta maanpinnan nousun tai tärinän rajoittamista, vaikeasti läpäistävien esteiden poistamista tai tunkeutumisen helpottamista. Paalut asennetaan maahan lyömällä, täryttämällä, puristamalla, ruuvaamalla tai näiden menetelmien yhdistelmällä.
1.2 Tämän eurooppalaisen standardin kattaman maata syrjäyttävän paalun materiaali voi olla — terästä — valurautaa — betonia, laastia — puuta — injektointiseosta — valmistettu yhdistämällä em. materiaaleja.
1.3 Tämä eurooppalainen standardi käsittelee säännöllisen muotoisia maata syrjäyttäviä paaluja, jotka ovat esivalmistettuja tai paikalla valettuja tai jotka on valmistettu näitä kahta menetelmää yhdistämällä. Liitteen A kuvissa A.2 ja A.3 on esimerkkejä näistä paaluista.
1.4 Maata syrjäyttäviä paaluja voidaan asentaa maaperään, jota on vahvistettu maapohjan vahvistusmenetelmillä. Pohjanvahvistus voidaan toteuttaa samanaikaisesti paalujen asennuksen kanssa, sitä ennen tai sen jälkeen.
1.5 Muut kuin käytännölliset näkökohdat eivät tämän eurooppalaisen standardin mukaan aseta rajoituksia poikkileikkauksen mitoille, paalun varren tai kärjen laajennukselle, pituudelle tai kaltevuudelle.
1.6 Tässä eurooppalaisessa standardissa esitetyt vaatimukset koskevat — yksittäisiä paaluja — paaluryhmiä — betoniponteista tehtäviä tukiseiniä.
1.7 Tämä eurooppalainen standardi ei koske pilareita, jotka tehdään käyttämällä maapohjan vahvistusmenetelmiä, kuten paikalla sekoittamalla, suihkuinjektoimalla, tiivistysinjektoimalla tai täryhuuhtelun avulla valmistettuja pilareita tai kivipilareita. Kaivettavat paalut sisältyvät standardin EN 1536 soveltamisalaan. Teräs- ja puutukiseinät sisältyvät standardin EN 12063 soveltamisalaan. Pienpaaluja koskee standardi EN 14199.
